Today, local elections are taking place in the UK for thousands of seats and right now there are political parties promoting anti-Christian agendas and plans which are threatening to tear down the Judeo-Christian heritage of this nation. After praying about this, I was led to Proverbs 14:1 which says, “The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the godly will flourish.” (NLT)
This gave me some comfort knowing that whatever party is in power, God will have the last word and no matter what policies are passed, evil and corruption will not remain, but those who follow Him and keep His laws will be blessed and will endure.
The use of the word “house” in this verse is interesting for it denotes something that is secure, permanent and lasting. In the UK, we have the House of Commons and the House of Lords and they are responsible for making laws and keeping a check on government policy. In the US, there is the House of Representatives, the White House and the Houses of Congress. All of these represent places of power, authority and control.
When a nation has a godless government it can seem hopeless for the church and for those seeking to do right, but the good news is that no matter how secure a leader or party seems to be, they will not continue unless they turn to the Lord. This is why we need to pray for our leaders and nations as a priority so that we can “live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:2 NIV).
On the other hand, we are promised that the “tent of the righteous will endure.” Tents are not fixed and impregnable like a house and can be moved or destroyed with very little effort, yet God promises to protect the dwelling place of those who trust Him and walk humbly before Him. We see this in the life of Abraham and his descendants and Moses and the tabernacle in the wilderness.
Whatever the outcome of the UK elections today and the political situation of your own nation, be assured that the ungodly will not remain in power and that God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail and you will inherit the land with Him forever.
